Erik Roner @ The US Open of Surfing

Headed up to Huntington Beach last weekend to work with the crew that was providing the LIVE feed for the event. Sitting there watching surfing, waiting to head to the trailer to edit commercial bumps, I get a call from my good friend Erik Roner. He rolls up with a GoPro sticking out of his pocket saying that he can hangout but he has to shoot a blog for Hurley and asked if I’d want to help? This is the result…

Signal Snowboards: Every Third Thursday “Best of Season One”

I’ve been watching this web series throughout the year and was really excited to get the opportunity to edit their season finale. This series is probably one of the best examples of DIY web marketing I’ve ever seen a company come up with. Season two sounds like it’s going to be even better, so stay tuned!

Past work: “Anomaly” from Teton Gravity Research

Looking back on some of the past projects that I’ve worked on. One in particular always stands out. The winter of 2006 provided TGR with a surplus of ridiculous footage. Chris Collins pulled the first triple backflip off a cliff, Erik Roner’s first ever ski BASE off of Cody Peak in Jackson Hole, and Jamie Pierre launched a world record cliff huck.
After the season ended, the creative process for the film was going crazy, literally. We kick started the summer with one ridiculous teaser called “The teaser for the teaser.” Which was intended to poke fun at the stereotypical/cliché teasers that everyone in the ski world had come to expect. I basically started the edit by turning on the microphone and going on a long rant about everything that we had shots of and how we’d typically edit it into a teaser. Complete with annoying sound effects, music transitions, and flashy edits. Then I went back and made all of those edits magically come true right before your eyes!
Anomaly “The Teaser for the Teaser”

Teaser 2 (AKA “The Game Over Teaser” or “Super Mario Teaser”) was just a quirky fun way to show the playfulness of the upcoming film. I had done this once before when I was a kid. Except, back then I pushed the edit button on the Hi8 camcorder and played Gameboy really close to the microphone. For this version, I used the Super Mario Soundboard.

Teaser 3 “Typical Teaser” was almost a way of finishing the previous joke that was being made with the “Teaser for the Teaser.” As you can see, most of the examples from the first teaser, play out in the “Typical Teaser.”

The Art of Flight

Got the call from Curt Morgan a couple of weeks ago asking if I’d like to do some editing for his new film “The Art of Flight.” I had perviously wrestled with the footage from their first trip to Canada for a few months last summer while creating a pilot episode for the television show titled “Moving Mountains.” Subsequently, I was given the responsibility of editing the television show into a segment for the film. After a few weeks of working on it from San Diego I headed up to Brain Farm’s headquarters in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where Curt and I were able to tag team it for a few days. While there, I got to check out some rough cuts from the film. Let’s just say, the rough cuts were groundbreaking and I can’t wait to see the final cuts!

Travis Rice and I checking out the Revelstoke, BC segment from Curt’s home editing system.

Quiksilver Young Guns

I’ve been watching the Young Guns movies for quite sometime now. So, I was pretty excited to get the chance to edit one of their videos. Editing a bunch of groms shredding is one of my favorite things. Really reminds me of the way action sports movies used to be. Back when you’d just have a slew of sick shots, random riders, riding mattered but the camera it was shot on didn’t, each rider gets a head shot and a name tag, and the song was good. This edit reminds me of the good ol’ days.
As always, super thankful to get to edit to some PANTyRAiD music. Thanks again Marty!

Billabong XXL 2011

Just finished up all of the video elements for the Billabong XXL awards show. This included all of the nomination packages, a show intro, four in depth packages for the “Ride of the Year” nominations and a 30min year in review of all the sessions from the entire year.

The largest challenge was dealing with the large amounts of various compressions that came in from all over the globe. Also, making sure that all of these elements were made available for viewing by all of the clients working on the project proved to be daunting. For that, I tried a website called TakeOffVideo.com which allowed me to load clips to a youtube style website that was viewable by direct invite only and allowed multiple people to comment on various different videos. It definitely made the project run smoother. Especially because one of the clients was in Indonesia working on a project and couldn’t download large files due to limited internet capabilities. I highly suggest giving it a try to see if it helps streamline your approval process.
